About the artist

A Buffalo, New York native, Catherine has spent much of her life crisscrossing the United States and abroad, chasing the creative muse while leaving a trail of travel inspired art along the way.

Massaro is a multimedia artist working in a variety of mediums which include oils, watercolors, pastels, printmaking, monoprints, collage, assemblage, digital photography, jewelry, and wearable art.

After living in ten different states, a stint on a 35 foot catamaran, and a career in product development and creative director, she finally landed in the hill country of Texas and opened her first gallery in 2018 , STUDIO MASSARO, in Johnson City, Texas while living in and renovating an historic home in Fredericksburg, Texas. STUDIO MASSARO the gallery, relocated to Fredericksburg, but closed a year later during Covid.

STUDIO MASSARO is now Catherine’s home studio on the grounds of her property in Fredericksburg, Texas where she is happy to see clients by appointment.

Catherine prefers to be immersed in a large body of work that provides for in depth exploration of a subject, ultimately having enough work for one-woman show every 2–4 years.

“The first 25 years of my artistic path I defined myself primarily as a painter while working in oils, watercolor and pastels. It was not until I was in my 50’s that I had a bit of an epiphany as an artist and got off the easel and created an entire body of work on the floor with rags and stencils. After that body of work I suddenly felt free to explore art in any direction my imagination took me, and has led me into defining myself as a multimedia artist.

I currently work in a variety of media and processes. Collage, assemblage, photography, oil painting, monoprints, pastel, watercolor… it’s all fair game and my creative playground now.

Plein air painting has always been part of my painting repertoire as I believe both drawing and painting from life so very important for artists at all ages. Experimentation, and exploration have become key to what inspires my next body of work, and I have come to include all these different media in my shows. A representational painting will be interpreted into an abstract collage, then into an assemblage, and all three of them inspired by my photograph.

The exploration of an image or an idea into a variety of media and processes is a deep dive into art and a way of working that I have come to embrace.”
